12 of 12 - What Could Possibly Go Wrong on a Day Like Today?
Let's just dive right in. Shall we?
06:30

Elliott is 100% better now. He's back to his old "Why are you waking me up to take my picture at 6:30 in the morning" self.
07:26

Reading a bitch's blog before I leave for work.
08:04

Stopping at AJ's for an iced tea and toasted bagel on my way to work.
09:02

I'm sure checking gum is bad for you, but bad breath is worse.
11:08

Shortly before this was taken, it was announced that the company I work for was reducing its staff by 50%.
Uh oh! Here we go again.
12:58

And there you have it. All packed up and ready to go. Ugh.
13:22

"What the hell are you doing home early?"
13:54

I think this calls for lots of cookies.
15:38

After making a few calls and sending some emails, I ran an errand. On the way home, I saw this billboard. Clever ad.
15:45

When I got home, I sat in my car and just stared at this wall for several minutes in the quiet; emotionally exhausted. I'm going on record as saying 2008 officially sucks balls. I'm tired. My eyes burn with a mixture of anger and weariness. I'm struggling to keep it together and that's what it feels like... a struggle. I want to throw and break shit and scream and cry, but I'm not sure any of that would help. So instead, I go into hyper MUST FIND A FUCKING JOB NOW mode and try not to think about the fact that I will be completely broke very, very soon.
At least it's comfortable in my car and it is paid for. I can always sleep there.
16:27

Back to hyper MUST FIND A FUCKING JOB NOW mode. Sending some design examples for a job.
16:40

Should I wash two caplets down with vodka or whiskey?

Comments
Vodka always does a headache good! 2008, definitely the years that sucks ass!

Oh, crap. I'm sorry your day sucked in such a big way. Good luck on the job hunt. Sunny

Really sorry to hear about this. This is a sucky year all around. The economy woes are hitting all of us in one way or another. Keep your head up bud, I know things will change for you soon!

Holy shit, that must totally suck, if I were you I would go on a kicking, screaming, breaking stuff rampage. It may not be useful but damn you'll feel better afterwards. Good luck with the job hunting, oh and go with whiskey, just becuase vodka is too predictable. There is always the option of rum too don't forget.

Oh Brian - I'm so sorry about the job. That just sucks.
Maybe my stupid story the Joe Joes brought to mind will make you smile. One of my nicknames is Jojo, so when Trader Joe's arrived in ATL, a friend bought me a box as a silly gift. He had them in his car all day, and it was really cold, so when he gave them to me, the box was so cold that I thought they were icecream sandwiches or something, so I stuck them in the freezer. ALmost broke a tooth when I finally tried one a few days later.
I'll be keeping you in my prayers regarding a new job. In the meantime, I'd go with the vodka.

Brian, I can't believe your day, it sucks. I'm so sorry about your job. I realize this just is not your year and I hope from this point forward it gets better!
Posted by: Dan | November 12, 2008 09:11 PM
Oh, sweetie! I am so, so sorry. I wish there was something concrete I could do for you but I have absolutely zero contacts anywhere.
I feel so angry on your behalf. Hang in there, Brian.

Oh man, that blows hardcore. I'm sorry to hear that, we can just hope things turn around in the future.
Posted by: Derek | November 12, 2008 11:19 PM
I can imagine how you're feeling right now... The sinking sensation in your stomach, the sense that you and the world are weirdly disconnected. I went through the same thing last November with a job that I'd had for 8 years. I never thought it would happen to me. Just know that things do get better. You're talented and determined, and you will make it through this mess of an economy that the idjits in the White House have left all of us in. My thoughts will be with you; you're gonna be okay =)

The answer is not vodka or whiskey. The answer is vodka, then whiskey.

Hey Brian, I'm really sorry about the job, this really sucks...
I'm glad to hear that Elliott is going better now though, that was scary. I hope you're gonna find a new job soon; 2008 sucks indeed, especially with this financial crisis.
You should come to Australia, it is not as bad here, and we could sure use some talented designers like yourself!

Truly a suck day. Take heart though. Same happened to me a year ago. Took me awhile, but I landed a better job in a better local in February. Now with the season coming to an end I'm worried again. That's just the nature of my profession. Average tenure of people in my position used to be 5 years. That hasn't changed much.
Do yourself a favor and don't go into a deep funk. Start networking with contacts you have in the industry and put the word out that you are looking. You can find a lot of leads this way.
2008 does suck! I just hope 2009 doesn't suck worse.

Oh, man, that SUCKS. I'm so sorry ...
Posted by: Chris | November 13, 2008 06:46 AM
Deep breathing. You'll make it through this. From the king of the layoffs (4 in 4 years), freelance if you have to on the side, everybody needs design work, start selling blog templates as a side income.
And you are always welcome to crash on my nonexistent sofa.
Posted by: Patrick | November 13, 2008 07:24 AM
Ahhh..Good Riddance 2008!
I say we open a small space in a strip mall where people who've been laid off can buy time in a booth where they can yell, scream, throw things, cry, whatever. We'll serve vodka and whiskey on the side.
I'm so sorry Brian. But I know with your talent, it won't be long before you're at a better job. One that you deserve and vise-versa.
Very happy to hear about Elliott.
Hang in there.

I can agree, 2008 sucks a major one. I'm really sorry about your job loss Brian, this damn economy at the moment.
But I'm glad Elliott is all better now. Here's hoping next months 12 is back with exciting new challenges.
Posted by: Pete | November 13, 2008 09:20 AM
shit. Sorry Brian
Posted by: seth | November 13, 2008 03:48 PM
to repeat/elaborate what i said via tweet; that fucking sucks.
unrelated - the website you showed; hacienda del sol.... how funny - i stayed there about 8 years ago.
small world eh? i loved that hotel.
Posted by: kyle | November 13, 2008 11:29 PM
HOLY CRAP! Didn't you just get that job!?
Well, you did it once, I know you can do it again.
Shall I scout out some NYC area jobs? ;)
Posted by: Mzouiser | November 14, 2008 12:30 PM
Well fuck. I'm sorry, Brian.
Posted by: Curtis | November 14, 2008 04:21 PM
Well that just plain crappy fucking sucks - and if I understand rightly, the second time this year? Poor you - I think you deserve the whole box of damn cookies for that kind of day.
I really hope you can find something soon - I don't have any contacts I'm afraid (wrong industry and no offices in AZ).
[big huge hugs]
Sorry for the delay in commenting - jetlag has messed my sleep up for the last 10 days and I've been too tired to get round everyone's Blogs, plus I'm doing NaNoWriMo (and moderating) so I basically have no time at all!
